A White Paper for Review by the Obama Administration and the CurrentCongress
When considering water production, resource extraction, subsistence uses and protection of instream flows in native Alaskan communities, it is essential that the Obama administration take into account the disproportionate impacts of climate change, water diversions, toxic emissions and water development on native Alaska native villages, and the potential for management by Alaskan tribal governments of water resources and participation in the decision making processes. The loss of public rights through privatization of the water resource by private industrial corporations, prioritizing industrial uses over affordable drinking water and a failure to acknowledge that water is a fundemental human right are seriously impacting Alaskan native communities.
Through this white paper, CWA is asking that the Obama administration consult with Alaskan tribal governments, federal and state agencies and conservation organizations all working together to protect tribal interests in water and tribal sovereignty in Alaska.
